Greystone Village

Sans titre - 1
Sitting between the historic Deschâtelets building and the Rideau river in Old Ottawa, Greystone Village Retirement is at the heart of one of the most accessible and dynamic districts of the Canadian capital. The complex offers 146 housing units and 23 care units for seniors, and fosters community spirit by establishing links with the neighbouring human and built environment.

In order to realize this community spirit, while simultaneously integrating the residence into the neighbourhood, public meetings were organized throughout the process. Studies were conducted with the Old Ottawa East Company to evaluate the impact of the new building on the existing area. The residence was deliberately set back from the street by the creation of a courtyard, its height was limited, and the proportions and materials of neighbouring structures were reflected in the design, all of which serves to attenuate its impact on the site.

The shape and orientation of the structure is considered so that each unit benefits from
a view of either the river or the park. By progressively setting back each floor, a series of communal terraces offering views of the surrounding countryside is made possible.

The common areas connect directly to the new Rideau River Nature Trail, where a public activity area is set up to the north of the property to smooth the transition to the adjacent row homes.
