The former Union of Canada building, this site is the new home of the first Andaz, a chain of luxury boutique hotels owned by Hyatt. A loyal client of NEUF architect(e)s, Claridge Homes was commissioned to develop and build this hotel for Hyatt — the owner and operator of this hotel chain.

NEUF architect(e)s was responsible for the design of this new 200-room, 18-storey building situated in the heart of Ottawa, near the Byward Market. Nearly 90% of the original concepts presented were retained, demonstrating a great deal of trust on the part of the client.

The tower features six conference rooms, lounge, restaurant, and two bars, one of which overlooks a rooftop outdoor terrace. All of this, and a stunning panoramic view of Ottawa’s skyline.
Design-wise, a minimalist approach was taken, both for the rooms and the common areas – with a particular focus on local natural materials, such as oak and grey stone. Keeping a young clientele in mind, the hotel features new technologies, design and architecture that make it stand apart from traditional hotels.
Situated on the Union of Canada building site on Dalhousie Street, numerous public consultations were held before project approval. The foundations of the building were retained, as they well-served the needs of the new Andaz boutique hotel.

From the demolition of the old building, to the construction and inauguration of the new hotel, the deadline was respected: a mere 20 months.
